Abstract
Introduction: One of the most anxiuos situations in clinical environments is exposure to invasive diagnostic methods, one of which is the endoscopy of the digestive tract. Endoscopic anxiety can prevent from geting optimal results. The aromatherapy is one of the complementary therapies that can reduce anxiety. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of inhalation of matricaria chamomile essential oil on the anxiety before Esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Materials & Method: This study is a randomized clinical trial Duble-blind that was carried out in May 2017 among patients referred to the endoscopic department of Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad. Population studied included 152 people who entered the study and were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. Anxiety was measure by using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaire. Then for 20 minutes, the intervention group were under inhaling matricaria chamomile essential oil and control group were under inhalig the placebo(Sesame Oil). then 10 minutes after the end of inhalation, the anxiety was again measured and the intervention was evaluated. Data analysis was done using SPSS 21 statistical softwares. Results: The mean age of participants was 42/05±4/5 years and 41/33% of them were male. Mean level of anxiety after inhalation in intervention groupe was 35/89±8/40 and in control groupe was 39/88±8/40 That in both groupe Decreased but in the intervention gruope decreased significantly. Discussion: The findings showed that matricaria chamomile essential oil inhalation was effective in decreasing the anxiety of endoscopic candidate patients.
