Over the past two centuries, nitrate production and consumption have increased significantly, especially in agriculture. Private water systems and shallow wells are more likely to have nitrate concentrations above the maximum contaminant level. The consumption of water contaminated with nitrate can cause a lot of nitrate to enter the body. According to epidemiological studies, high concentration of nitrate in water causes methemoglobinemia in children, and even the US.EPA and World Health Organization guidelines for nitrate in drinking water were promulgated to protect infants from developing methemoglobinemia, an acute condition. Adverse health effects may be the result of a complex interaction of the amount of nitrate ingested and hemoglobin that decrease oxygen transferrin capability and case to methemoglobinemia that known as blue baby syndrome. The main aim of this study is to have a brief review on literatures and epidemiological studies about the source of nitrate in drinking water and adverse health effects on infants such as methemoglobinemia.
