Abstract
The effects of cool dialysate on restless leg syndrome in patients treated with hemodialysis Introduction: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a common sensory disorder that occurs during resting of patients and its symptoms are observed during hemodialysis (HD) sessions. Using a cool dialysate (CD) is an easy, cost-free, safe and non-pharmacological way. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effect of cool dialysate (CD) on RLS in patients undergoing HD. materials and methods: The present study is a two-group, triple blind randomized clinical trial and parallel design before and after that is done in HD centers of Sabzevar on 63 patients with RLS during HD. Using random allocation blocks, 32 patients were in the intervention group and 31 patients in the control group. In the first stage, patients in both groups received weekly (3 sessions) dialysis with 37 ° C dialysate. Then, in the next stage, the intervention group with dialysate 35/5° C and control group with dialysate 37 ° C for one month were under HD. At the end of each stage and two weeks after the end of the intervention, the severity of RLS was measured using the standard questionnaire of RLS in two groups. Data analysis using student t-test and generalized estimation equations were analyzed by software R version 3.3.1 at 95% confidence level. Results: There was no significant difference between the intervention and control groups before the intervention (P> 0.05). The mean of severity of RLS in the intervention group decreased from 31.50 ± 0.693 before intervention to 11.66 ± 0.830 after intervention (P <0.001), whereas before and after the intervention, the change There was no significant difference in the control group. Discussion: The use of CD as a Non-pharmacological method significantly reduces the severity of RLS in patients treated with HD.
