Abstract

Background Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation in the body , which plays an important role in many cellular functions .Because of its role in several enzymatic reactions contributing to cardiovascular hemodynamics, it is considered as an important factor in cardiovascular hemodynamic stability , especially in people with congestive heart failure (CHF). Since cardiovascular disease is the cause of mortality in more than 50 % of ESRD patients, understanding the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases in these patients can help us to reduce complications and mortality in ESRD patients. Method In this cross-sectional study, 60 hemodialysis patients of Vasei hospital of Sabzevar , underwent Doppler echocardiography and their serum magnesium levels were measured too . Results Thirty five patients ( 58.33% ) had CHF . Thirty two patients had abnormal levels of serum magnesium ( 53.33 %): fifteen patients ( 25 %) had hypomagnesemia and 17 patients ( 28.33%) had hypermagnesemia. Hypomagnesiumy prevalence in patients with CHF was lower than patients without CHF . (22 % vs. 28 % ). ; but this difference was not meaningful.(alpha=0.05) Hypermagnesemia prevalence in both groups of patients was equal . ( 28 %) Conclusion CHF and impaired serum magnesium levels in hemodialysis patients, have high prevalence . Our study suggests that there is no meaningful association between Mg abnormalities and CHF prevalence , but further studies are warranted.
