Abstract

The effect of progressive muscle relaxation on severity of restless leg syndrome in patients under treatment with hemodialysis Introduction: Restless leg syndrome is one of the common complications in patients under treatment with hemodialysis. Today, the treatment of this syndrome has been turned in to non pharmacological methods due to insufficiency of pharmacological treatment and medication side effects. . Progressive muscle relaxation, is a method which is designed for reducing patients’ stress, pain and anxiety. So, the present study aimed to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation on the severity of RLS in hemodialysis patients. Method: The study was a randomized controlled trial, a blind experimental study with a pre-post test design and one control group. 74 patients under treatment with hemodialysis referred to hemodialysis ward of Hashemi Nejad Hospital in Tehran on Octo ber 2015, were randomly selected and by using 4-block design were divided in to intervention and control groups. Progressive muscle relaxation technique was trained to intervention group in two sessions. They were asked to practice it twice a day (once during the day and once at night before bedtime) for one month. The data related to patients’ RLS severity were collected, before and after intervention, by completing the RLS standard questionnaire in two groups. Data were analyzed with descriptive and analytical tests ( independent and paired t-test, Analysis of co-variance ) using SPSS software version 23. Results: The result of present study showed no significant differences in the distribution of variables in intervention and control group before intervention (P>0/05). RLS severity in progressive muscle relaxation group was reduced from 28/24 ± 7/33 to 10/67±5/66 (P=0/001). While there were no significant changes in RLS severity in control group before (25/57±9/85) and after the intervention (26/16±9/69) (P=0/501). The mean score of intensity of restless leg between the two groups has a significant difference after removing the effect of the intensity of restless leg in pretest (η2 =0/113 , P=0/0001 , F(1و70)=8/89). Conclusion: The finding indicated that using progressive muscle relaxation technique causes a significant reduction in RLS severity of patients under treatment with hemodialysis. So, it is recommended to use this technique as one of the non pharmacological methods in these patients. Keywords: Restless leg syndrome, Progressive muscle relaxation, Hemodialysis
