Abstract
The effect of fenugreek seeds on gastrointestinal disorder in patients with mechanical ventilation Background & Aims:functional gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is an important factor in clinical outcome and survival of patients in the ICU. gastrointestinal problems such as delayed gastric emptying and residual volume, vomiting and regurgitation, abnormal motility patterns and reduse Bowel Sounds and ileus, diarrhea and constipation, Swelling Intestines and gastrointestinal bleeding in mechanically ventilated patients are common. Due to the limitations and complications of treatments available, This study aimed to evaluate the effects of fenugreek seeds on Gastrointestina disorders Mechanically ventilated patients. Materials & Method: In this double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 mechanically ventilated patients hospitalized in ICUs were divided into intervention and control groups. intervention group (30 patients) and control group (n = 30)a fter matching for sex and age and disease and medications. groups intervention in addition to routine treatment for five days received 3 mg fenugreek seeds twice a day with gavage solution. and groups control received only routine treatment. Defecation and bowel sounds and gastrointestinal bleeding and vomiting and regurgitate on of gastric residual volumes of admission and during the five days were measured. Data analysis was done using SPSS software version16 with Friedman test, cocran test, Repeated measures anova at a significance level level of (0.05). Result: The mean residual volume and number Defecation and bowel sounds and Percentage gastrointestinal bleeding and vomiting and regurgitation in the admission day was not significantly different between the groups. During five days, the mean residual volume decreased in the Fenugreek group and increased in the control group which the difference was significant (P= 000/0). The mean bowel sounds increased in the Fenugreek group compared with control grope which the difference was significant (P= 0/038).There was a trend toward a decrease in vomiting and regurgitation in the Fenugreek group (P= 0/005). Percentage abdominal bloating decreased in the Fenugreek group which the difference was significant(P = 0/000) and increased in the control group which was no significant difference (P = 0/484).Gastrointestinal bleeding increased in the control group which was significant difference (P= 0/043) and decreased in the Fenugreek group which the difference was no significant (P= 0/075). Percentage Constipation and diarrhea decreased in the Fenugreek group which the difference was significant (P= 0/015). Conclusions: The result of this study showed that fenugreek seeds reduces gastrointestina disorders in mechanically ventilated Patients compared with control group.
