Abstract

Background and Aim: Since low birth weight plays an important role in the infant’s mortality rate and complications and the fact that taking care of these babies cost a lot, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of low birth weight and its relationship with some related factors at Shahidan Mobini Educational Hospital in Sabzevar in 2014. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study in which the information of 650 infants born at Shahidan Mobini Educational Hospital in Sabzevar in 2014 was collected. The data were gathered from the information registered in the infant’s record. Afterwards, using SPSS software, the data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and other statistical tests. Findings: Among the 650 infants, 8.8% suffered from low birth weight (<2500 gr). It was revealed that birth weight was significantly associated with the gestational age, first and fifth-minute APGAR, mother’s preeclampsia and gestational diabetes, and place of residency. On the other hand, no significant relationship was observed between birth weight and birth season, consanguineous marriage, mother’s age and educational level, type of delivery and anomaly. Conclusion: Overall, it seems that prevalence of low birth weight at Shahidan Mobini Educational Hospital in Sabzevar was similar to other parts of Iran. Thus, preventing premature delivery, implementing educational and treatment intervention programs for vulnerable mothers such as those affected by preeclampsia and gestational diabetes can have an effective role in preventing low birth weight.
