Abstract

Effect of Educational intervention Based on the Trans-theoretical Model in promoting physical activity of Pre-diabetic patients referred to clinic Sabzevar University of Medical Sciences Abstract Background and objectives: Diabetes is a common disease and increasing rapidly. Individuals with pre-diabetes (Fasting blood sugar (FBS) 100–125 mg/dl) are at risk of morbidity to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Thus they are considered as appropriate community for prevention of diabetes with intervention in lifestyle. The aim of this study is promoting physical activity based on applying Transtheoretical model in Sabzevar pre-diabetes patients. Materials and methods: In this interventional study, 80 pre-diabetes patients were selected from preliminary stages of model (Pre-contemplation and contemplation and preparation stages). Then participants assigned to the intervention and control groups randomly and equally. The tool of gathering data was a questionnaire based on Transtheoretical model that its validity and reliability was approved and was completed by interview. After pre-test, subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of stages of change. Then TTM-based intervention were conducted by group discussion and lecture methods with the use of pamphlets, photos, PowerPoint and exercising practical training for different groups in health centers. Data were analyzed by using SPSS16 and SAS 9/1 and central indexes, independent t-test and chi-square test and generalized estimating equation. Results: The mean ages of participants in the intervention and control groups were 46.68± 6.86 and 46.88±8.82 years respectively. There were not statistical significant differences between the intervention and control groups in regular physical activity and constructs of Transtheoretical model before the educational intervention. Immediately after the educational intervention and three months later, change stages of physical activity increased significantly in the intervention group compared to the control group (p<0/001). Also the results showed that there are a significant increasing in mean structures of cognitive and behavioral processes, self-efficacy and decisional-balance in the intervention group compared to the control group after the educational intervention (p <0/001). Conclusion: Education of pre-diabetes patients in the field of physical activity based on Transtheoretical model is effective in promotion of change stages and performance of regular physical activity behavior in patients. Therefore, it seems necessary to design and implementation of similar interventions for pre-diabetes patients. Keywords: Transtheoretical Model, Exercise, Prediabetic State.
