Abstract
Title: Evaluation of the effectiveness of topical application of chamomile oil (Matricariachamomilla L) as a supplement to the relief of infantile colic. Background: Infantile colic and consequently cry infants, restlessness and insomnia during the first months of life in infants a transient problem that terms are clinically normal, and because of unknown etiology that occurs, there is no effective treatment to improve it. This problem could be stress, depression and mental health conditions affect families and communities. Given the long history, safe and cost-effective use of medicinal plants in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topical application of chamomile oil supplements as a way to improve and reduce the symptoms of infantile colic. Methods: In this clinical trial, 81 infants aged from 2 weeks to 4 months in Sabzevar, double-blind, randomized in two groups were compared. In the intervention group chamomile oil, three times a day and each ten drops of chamomile oil and for 14 days and hand the mother's abdomen infant as time was applied, and the group paraffin as placebo for the homogenization of massage in both with the same method was used for 14 days. The effectiveness of chamomile oil based on the change in the frequency and duration of crying and infant sleep in the days before the treatment, the first day of the seventh and fourteenth treatment using the form log data daily, was evaluated. Results: After two weeks of treatment results showed that the mean duration of crying two groups of seventh day and the fourteenth treatment, significant differences exist (p=0/03 and p=0/002) as the fourteenth day average 149/32 minutes of crying time in the group and in the placebo group dropped 75/82 minutes. Average time bed time infants only on the fourteenth day of treatment significantly increased in the group Chamomile (p=0/018). Average sleep duration in infants’ daisies from the first day until the fourteenth increased while that in the placebo group had no regular pattern on the seventh day to the first day of the rose and the fourteenth day of the first day was the same. However, the average number of infants in both groups decreased, but the average number of infants in both groups at the end of the first, seventh and fourteenth days prior to treatment, there was no significant difference. Conclusion: Topical application of chamomile oil can be used as a supplement; safe and low-cost in relief of infantile colic. Keywords: infantile colic, chamomile, complementary medicine
