Abstract

Intruduction: Osteoarthritis is one of the most common diseases in older people. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as the most Prescription drugs have many side effects, but medicinal plants can also be used in treatment. One of these medicinal plant is Nigella sativa. The aim of this study was to investigate the topical effect of Nigella sativa oil in comparison with diclofenac gel on the reduction of osteoarthritis pain in older people. Materials and Methods: This study was a double-blind clinical trial. Samples were 52 men and women aged 60-80 years old. They were selected using a convenience method and then were randomly assigned into Nigella sativa oil and diclofenac gel groups (n=26 in each group). The topical application of Nigella sativa oil and diclofenac gel was performed for twice a day for 21 days. The KOOS questionnaire in 5 dimensions (pain, quality of life, the symptoms related to knee, sport and hobby and daily activities) was used for data collection about pain before the use of drugs, the tenth day and the twenty-first day after the intervention. Data was compared by SPSS-11.5 with descriptive statistics test, Correlated data analysis, Independent t test, GEE, paired t test, K2in significant level 0.05. Results: Paired t-test showed that both interventions improved pain in the subjects and they had similar effects (p<0.05). However, T-test and Mann-Whitney U test showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups in the studied dimensions except pain. Dimension of pain On the 21st day after intervention was significantly lower than in the Nigella sativa oil group compared with that of the diclofenac gel group (p= 0.04). Discussion: Due to the similar effects of diclofenac gel and Nigella sativa oil and the side effects of chemical drugs, Nigella sativa oil is recommended to safely reduce knee joints’ pain in older people. Keywords: Diclofenac, knee joint, Nigella sativa oil, osteoarthritis, older people, pain
