Abstract
The effect self-transcendence on physical health status in patients treated with hemodialysis attending peer support groups Backgrounds: The theory of self-transcendence proposes that individuals who face human vulnerability or mortality obtain an increased capacity for self- transcendence and its positive influence on well-being. Purpose of this study was to determine the effect self-transcendence on physical health status in patients treated with hemodialysis attending peer support groups. Material and Method: This clinical trial research with two case and control groups was performed on 55 patients treated with hemodialysis Initially, 64 patients were selected, 32 patients in each group, but at the end of the study due to sample loss, the data of 55 patients were analyzed Participants attended 8 weekly sessions' comprising 2 hours each. Research tools were " Self-Transcendence Scale (STS)" and Section Physical functioning "Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form(KDQOL-SFTM)". Before and after the intervention, tools was completed by the patients in both groups. For data analysis, descriptive statistics and independent t-test, paired t test and pearson coefficients was used. Results Attending in peer support group had significant differences between case and control group in physical health status and self-transcendence (p< 0.0001), after attending peer support group in case group there were a significant differences in physical health status and also self-transcendence (p< 0.0001). In other hand, after the time of peer support group in control group there were a significant differences in physical health status(p= 0.006). There was positive relationship between self-transcendence and physical health status (p< 0.0001, r=0.61). Conclusions: Results show that the positive effects of peer support group on self-transcendence can promote physical health status in patients treated with hemodialysis that can promote quality of life. These findings can use in education and management in nursing in order to improve the physical health of patients treated with hemodialysis. Key words: self-transcendence, peer support group, physical health
