Abstract

Introduction: Preterm labor (PTL) is defined as a labor that begin before 37 weeks of gestation, with birth weight lesser than 2500 gram. Maternal hemoglobin and hematocrit level in first, second and third trimesters are considered possible risk factors. Assessing the relation between maternal hematocrit and hemoglobin level; and LBW and low birth weight is the purpose of this study. Material and method: Three hundred and three pregnant women enrolled in this cross sectional – analytic study. Maternal hemoglobin and hematocrit level in first, second and third trimesters were documented. Study data was analyzed by SPSS (V19) software. Result: Prevalence of low birth weight and PTL in hematocrit level lesser than 33 in first, second and third trimester were 12.5% and 25%, 13.3% and 20%, 11.6% and 21% respectively. Low birth weight and PTL in hematocrit level between 33 and 40 in first, second and third trimester were 5.9% and 8.9%, 3.7% and 5.4%, 2.1% and 3.8% respectively. Low birth weight and PTL in hemoglobin lesser than 10.5 in first trimester were both 25%, second trimester were 21.7% and 34.8%, third trimester 21.2% and 33.3% respectively. Prevalence of low birth weight and PTL in hematocrit level between 10 and 13.5 in first, second and third trimester were 6.7% and 13.8%, 4.7% and 8.3%, 2.73% and 5.3% respectively. Low birth weight and PTL in hemoglobin level greater than 13 in first trimester were 2.8% and 4.5, second trimester were 0% and 8.7%, third trimester were both 0% respectively. Discussion and conclusion: There was a significant relation between low hematocrit and hemoglobin level in each trimester with PTL and low birth weight. Perinatal complication risks were in low hematocrit and hemoglobin level in first trimester were greater than second and third trimesters. As a result, we suggest that evaluation of hematocrit and hemoglobin level could be considered in perinatal care. Keyword: Low Birth Weight, Preterm Labor, Anemia, Hemoglobin.
