Aromatherapy is one of the ways to reduce the pain of this period. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of inhaling rose extract on chronic musculoskeletal pain in older adults. Methods and Materials: This study is a clinical trial. Sampling was carried out using the easily available method with random allocation on 60 elderly people with chronic musculoskeletal pain who were members of retirement centers of Sabzevar city in 1395. The elderly were randomly allocated using permutation blocks in two groups of intervention (31 people) and control (29 people). During the intervention, pain was measured using a numerical rate scale and visual pain assessment and McGill Pain Questionnaire, which has been a valid and reliable questionnaire in other studies, before intervention, interviews were conducted twice a week on Mondays (NRS) and Thursdays (McGill Pain Questionnaire) by telephone in two groups. In the intervention group, inhalation of the rose extract was done by linen handkerchief with three-drop dip of the extract on it in a 25-cm distance from 9 o'clock to 6 o'clock, once a day for three weeks. In the control group, sweet almond oil was used using the same method. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 and with a significant level of p <0.05. Findings: The findings showed that pain intensity score at the beginning of the study was medium in two groups and there was no significant difference between the two groups. While by the end of the three weeks after the intervention, the pain has been reduced in both groups and this was more in the intervention group. The present study showed that the inhalation of Rose extract did not affect the sensory and emotional aspect of pain in women and men while there was a statistically significant difference between men and women in inhalation of rose extract in the sensory aspect but there was no difference in emotional dimension between women and men.
