Abstract
Introduction and Objective: Urinary tract infections (UTI) cause about 40% of hospital infections and catheterization of the bladder is the predisposing factor to the infection. With proper indication of catheterization, the related urinary tract infections can be prevented. These indications include urinary retention, bilateral hydronephrosis, lack of co-operation of patients with cognitive impairment, a patient who is extremely ill, helps to improve perineal and substrate wounds, bladder washing and etc. The aim of this study was to determine the correct catheterization of Foley catheter in patients admitted to the internal and neurological wards. Materials and Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted on patients admitted to the neurosurgical and internal wards of Sabzevar hospital. The researcher completed a questionnaire contain some items including hospital admission, record medical history, creatinine, age and sex; and also used the checklist contains the correct indexes (lack of consciousness, urinary retention, bilateral hydronephrosis, and etc.) and incorrect indexes (inability to walk, old age, urine output, and etc.) catheterization. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 software. Statistically significant considered at 0.5. Results: In the 6-month period, 385 patients were examined, 232 (3.60%) had an appropriate indication of Foley catheter insertion. From the patients were admitted in the internal (278 individuals) and neurosurgical (107 individuals) ward, 59% and 63.6% had a proper indication of catheterization respectively. The most common correct and incorrect indication is non-consciousness (9.44%) and the inability to walk (16.4%) in turn. According to this study, there was no significant difference in terms of the frequency of correct indication of catheterization based on age, sex, symptom section, and creatinine. Conclusions: The prevalence of incorrect indication is high (7.39%) and may cause urinary tract infections. Training is highly recommended for medical staff to prevent the incorrect indication of the urinary catheter.
