Abstract
Introduction: A placement of an intravenous catheter is one of the most common invasive and painful nursing procedures which can change the physiological indexes. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of topical application of lavender essential oil on physiological indexes and pain intensity during venous cannulation. Method: This is a there-blind randomized controlled clinical trial. Study sample included hospitalized patients in surgery units of Sabzevar Emdad Shahid Beheshti hospital who were condidated for elective surgery in 2017. In order to this, the samples of study were allocated into two intervention (33) and control (33) groups. In intervention group be used of 3 puffs (0.3 ml) of 100% lavender essential oil and in control group used of 3 puffs pure water, were sprayed on the puncture site and left for 5 min. the Mean of pain severity and physiological indexes were measured and recorded immediately, 5 and 10 minutes after intravenous catheter insertion. Pain intensity was measured in this study through the numeric ratingscale (NRS) of pain. Data were analyzed using the SPSS (version 16) software and Chi-squire, independent t and Mann-Whitney. Results: There were significant differences between mean of severity of pain, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate and O2Saturation into the intervention and control groups.mean of severity of pain, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate were lesser and the mean of O2Saturation was higher in the lavender group than in the control group. Conclusion: the topical application of lavender essential oil, as a simple, inexpensive and safe complementary metod,can reducepain severity of intravenous catheter and prevent from negative changes in physiological indexes.
