Abstract
Introduction: Iron supplementation during infancy improves not only anemia and its related defects but also improves the development of infants. However, no accurate study has been done in Iranian population on the effect of iron drop on infant growth. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the onset of iron supplementation on infant's developmental indicators at the end of a four-month period compared to six months of age. Materials and Method: This study was performed on 100 infants (50 cases in the start of iron drop in four months, 50 cases in the control group). Infants were randomly assigned into two groups and iron drop 2 drops/kg was administrated and growth index was recorded in infants. Chi-Square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the data. Results: The results of our study showed that there was no significant difference between the mean height, weight and head circumference before the 4th month (P> 0.05), but growth index from 6 months to 12 months in the iron-receiving group at the end of 4 months were significantly more than the control group. (P <0.05) Conclusion: Considering the high incidence of low weight, height and head circumference during infancy and its complications on different organs, preventive measures are recommended in infants (especially high risk infants) with iron administration from 4 months of age
