Abstract

Title: The effect of pentoxifylline on reducing in restless leg syndrome in patients undergoing hemodialysis Background: End-stage renal disease is recognizable with its progressive and irreversible renal function destruction. The United States Renal Data System (USRDS) shows that 90 percent of people suffering from this disease are being treated under hemodialysis. One of the most common side effects and complaints due to hemodialysis treatment is restless leg syndrome (RLS). RLS is a neurological disorder characterized by intense tendency to move legs during rest, throbbing, Irritation, or creeping sensations in the legs. The overall aim of this study is to evaluate the rate of decrease in RLS in patients with dialysis patients. Materials and Methods: This is a randomized triple-blind clinical trial in which 50 hemodialysis patients were under hemodialysis treatment in Sabzevar`s Vaseei hospital and Mehr clinic and were put into two groups. First group was treated with Placebo, 1/day and the second group was treated with oral Pentoxifylline, 1/day with dosage of 400 mg. Finally, at the beginning and the end of each month and after 3 months of treatment, they were evaluated by a questionnaire for RLS. Also C-reactive protein (CRP) serum level was evaluated by specific kits with 2cc blood at the beginning and end of the design. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software with a significant level of P < 0.05. Results: After three months, the results were obtained and about the restlessness relief variable on hands and feet, with moving the limbs after 3 months from the trial started, there was a significant relation between two control and intervention groups (with significance of 0.035). Sleep disorder significances were respectively 0.026, 0.022, 0.218, 0.034 and mood disorder significances were respectively 0.044, 0.039, 0.814, 0.261 and there was no meaningful relation between other variables. Discussion: Results of this study showed that the most therapeutic effect of Pentoxifylline on signs related to RLS on hemodialysis patients was mostly on restlessness relief in hands and feet which makes them feel comfortable.
