Abstract

Background: Depression during pregnancy can have adverse effects on mother, fetus, and newborn. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between depression in pregnant women with anthropometric and neonatal apgar score. Methods: Of those pregnant women referred to Mobini hospital of Sabzevar who met the inclusion criteria, were included in the study and were divided into two groups according to the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS): The first group with depression and the second group without depression. Routine care and monitoring of mothers' mental health were performed for both groups until delivery. In the last stages of the pregnancy (weeks 37 to 40), the mothers of both groups were again screened by the EPDS and participants in the first group that again met EPDS criteria were included in the case group (depressed, n=53) and participants in the second group that again did not meet EPDS criteria were included in the control group (n=53). After delivery, other required information including newborns' birth weight, height, and head circumference, and the first minute apgar score were recorded. Results: At the 22-20 weeks of pregnancy, the mean score of depression in the case and control groups were 16.42±3.12 and 5.96±1.96, respectively (P<0.0001). At the 37-40 weeks, it was 16.98±3.17 and 5.83±2.05 for case and control groups, respectively (P<0.0001). The average weight of infants was 3260.38±427.13 g and 3441.51±310.36 g in the case and control groups respectively (P=0.014). The average height of infants was 48.26±3.64 cm and 49.36±4.06 cm in the case and control groups respectively (P=0.147). The average head circumference of infants was 34.26±1.61 cm and 34.81±1.70 cm in the case and control groups respectively (P=0.089). The average 1'st minute Apgar score of infants were 8.68±1.31 and 8.83±1.11 in the case and control groups respectively (P=0.523). Conclusion: Depression in pregnancy has a meaningful relationship with low weight at birth. So, it is suggested that monitoring and promoting of mental health of pregnant women be considered in the pregnancy care programs.
