Abstract

Background: In recent years, extensive research has been conducted in the area of patient dose reduction. In 1996, Diagnostic Reference Level (DRL) was introduced by The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Many countries and international organization like the ICRP have DRLs for all radiological investigations, which serve as guide for patient dose reduction. The concept of DRL is to optimize diagnostic practice and patient dose reduction in radiology.Materials and Methods: This study is a mini-review of studies on the state of the DRL in Iran. In order to search vastly without time constraints using various data bases; Google-Scholar, Medline, Embase, PubMed, Iran doc, Iran Medex, Magiran, SID using the keyword mesh including Diagnostic Reference Level, Medical Imaging, Radiation Protection, Radiology.Conclusion: Data on radiation dose to patients in various hospitals is complex, and several factors affect its level. According to the various studies in radiography, the third quartile of dose is considered as DRL that are calculated at the local, regional or national level. DRL has been announced to be a dose-related determinant, compared to Diagnostic Reference Level that was published by ICRP. If the DRL would be higher than standard amount, possible reasons for this are discussed.
