Abstract

The effects of ice bag application on pain associated with sutures removal from incision on leg vein harvest in cardiac surgery(CABG) Rad M , Namayandeh Jourabchi A , Abbasi Tashnizi M ,Rakhshani MH ABSTRACT Aims: Suturing, is the most common way to close wounds and non-absorable sutures should be removed. Suture removal is a painful process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of ice bag on pain intensity of sutures removal from incision in leg vein harvest in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods: This single-blinded clinical trial was done on 90 post cardiac surgery patients in Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad, Iran, who had at least 20 cm incision in surgical site (vein harvest from leg). Patients assigned to 3 groups of ice bag 10 minutes, ice bag 20 minutes and control. Ice bags were applied on surgical site for 10 or 20 minutes before sutures removal. Pain intensity was measured by visual analog scale and pain quality was assessed by Short-Form and Modified McGill Pain Questionnary before and immediately after sutures removed. Data analysis was done by ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square,ANCOVA and Fisher exact tests. Results: There were no significant difference in pain intensity and quality scores of three groups before sutures removal. Immediately after sutures removal, pain intensity score in ice bag 10 minutes (2/53±0/93) and ice bag 20 minutes (1/60±0/85) were significantly less than control group (4/13±1/40). Although there was significant difference in pain quality score between ice bag 10 minutes (3/13± 1/79), ice bag 20 minutes (2/56±1/22) and control (4/33±1/70) groups (p<0/05). Conclusion: Applying ice bag is an effective, cheap and low risk intervention for decreasing pain associated with sutures removal. Keywords: Pain, Ice bag, Suture removal, Cardiac surgery
