Abstract
Objective: A number of factors such as cardiac output, electrolyte imbalances, social seclusion, loneliness, fear from death and illnesses, and deprivation from home and family make patients in the ICU wards prone to delirium. Based on studies done so far (experience), it is believed that patients suffering delirium have a higher mortality rate, and a longer stay period at ICU wards compared to those who do not experience delirium. Moreover, a longer stay at ICU wards imposes additional costs on the patients. Therefore, the prevention of delirium can eliminate these problems for the patients. Hence, the present study is an attempt to examine the effect of balancing sensory inputs on the occurrence of delirium for patients. Method: The present clinical trial was performed on 80 subjects who were randomly assigned to the control and experimental groups. The subjects in the control group received the normal care procedures. However, the subjects were hospitalized in rooms where they had a clock and a calendar in front of them. Moreover, they were interviewed twice a day, in the morning and in the afternoon, during which they were informed of the time and their whereabouts. The necessary data were collected through demographic forms. Moreover, Richmond standard was used as the inclusion criteria. In addition, Nicham test was used as a basis for the identification and classification of delirium. In addition, Nicham questionnaire was used for three consecutive days in the morning and afternoon to collect the necessary data from the subjects in both groups. In dubious cases, a psychiatrist was called for to make the final decision. The collected data were analyzed by SAS software. Findings: The results of the analyses showed that in the control group, delirium had an occurrence of 35%, with 4 hypoactive cases (10%), 5 hyperactive cases (12.5%), and 5 mixed cases (12.5%). However, in the experimental (intervention) group it showed and occurrence percentage of 7.5%, with 2 hypoactive cases (5%), and 1 mixed case (2.5%) and no hyperactive case. Moreover, the comparison of the cognition score as measured by Nicham test showed that there were no significant differences between the subjects in the control and the experimental groups in the first day. However, in the second and third days, there were significant differences between the subjects in the experimental and control groups. conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the balancing of the sensory inputs had a meaningful positive effect in reducing the occurrence of delirium for the patients of the heard ICU ward. key words: sensory inputs, delirium, CCU
