Abstract

Background: Patients with chronic renal failure, in addition to various physiological changes are faced with many psychological pressures. One of the ways to control these tensions , complementary medicine ( acupressure ) is. The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of acupressure on anxiety of patients undergoing hemodialysis in City Torbat Heidarie. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial is a prospective randomized, study on 81 patients undergoing hemodialysis who were admited to Nohom dey hospitl of torbat heidarie in the year 2013. After using the permutated block randomization patients were devided into three groups of acupressure in true nodes (27 people), acupressure in false nodes (27 people), and control group (27 people). Using Spiel Berger scale, we calculated the amount of anxiety in patients in the end of the first week of intervention, the end of the second week of intervention and the end of third and forth weeks of intervention. In the intervention group, the actual set of points is massaged. This method was repeated twice a week for four weeks. In addition to massage of each node, we asked each ptient to take three slow, deep breathes. The data was analysed using descriptie statistic and analysis methods such as Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman's test with a significance level of 0/05 and also by using SPSS software version 16. Results: By considering one way variance analysis test, we see that the covert and overt amounts of anxiety in our real node pressure group are much lower in the level of 0.05 from the first to forth week when compared to the amount of anxiety before this intervention. (The P value= 0/005=, P value =0/027). Average state and trait anxiety in patients acupressure in false nodes group in the first and fourth weeks before the intervention showed significant difference. Average state and trait anxiety in patients acupressure in control group in the first and fourth weeks before the intervention showed no significant difference. Conclusion: This study indicates that acupressure of true nodes can reducethe covert and overt anxiety in hemodialysis patients. Keywords: Acupressure, Anxiety, Hemodialysis
