Abstract
Introduction: asymptomatic bacteriuria is a common concern during pregnancy. Delay in diagnosis and treatment may have harmful consequences for both mother and fetus. Physiological changes of urinary tract during pregnancy will facilitate micro-organisms growth. Evaluation of asymptomatic bacteriuria and antibiotic sensitivity in pregnant women who referred to Shahidan Mobini Hospital, Sabzevar, Iran between 2014 and 2015 is the purpose of this study. Material and methods: two hundred and twenty pregnant women enrolled in this study and were evaluated for age, gestational age, education level, history of previous renal or any systemic disease, history of previous urinary tract infection, number of pregnancies, socioeconomic status and regional living area. Urine sample was collected as strile midstream sample and was tested for culture and analysis. Samples with colony count greater than 100000 were tested by disck difusion with carbibayer method. Results: our results showed that 7% of pregnant women have asymptomatic bacteriuria. There was a relation between education level, socioeconomic status, reginal living area, history of previous urinary tract infection, history of renal complications and asymptomatic bacteriuria with asymptomatic bacteruria. However, last birth method, number of pregnancies and having any systemic illnesses were not significantly relataed to asymptomatic bacteriuria. Isolated organisems were: Escherichia coli (44%), staphyloccocus ureus (31%),Staphylococcus epidermidis (6%), clebsiella pneumonie (13%) and Streptococcus faecalis (6%). Antibiogram results showed that cotrimoxasol, nitroforantoin, ciproflouxasin and nalidixic acide are apropriate antibiotics. Discussion and Conclusion: asymptomatic bacteriuria is a common concern in Sabzevar (prevalance rate of 7%) and screening of pregnant women with urine analysis can prevent further complications.
