Abstract
introduction and objectives: The high rate of eye conditions among mechanically ventilated patients shows the importance of eye care provided by nurses for these patients. Hence the objective of the present study was to compare the potential effect of using Vitamin A eye ointment and using eye tapes to keep the eye close on preventing ocular surface disorder of the eye. Materials and method: Some 15 patients hospitalized in the ICU ward who met the inclusion criteria were included in the present single blind trial. For every patient, one of the eyes was randomly subjected to vitamin A ointment treatment every six hours while the other eye was kept close using a anti-allergic tape with the same rate. A ophthalmologist examined the patients' eyes for any possible eye surface diseases using an ophthalmoscope. This procedure was followed every day for seven consecutive days. The necessary data were collected using demographic checklists,keratopathy tool for eye surface diseases (fluorescein test and an ophthalmoscope). The collected data were subjected to a multilevel regression test for correlated data using Gee method. Moreover, the collected data were analyzed using SAS (9.1) software at a significance level of 95%. findings: The findings of the present study showed that 23.4% of the eyes suffered eye conditions (diseases), with 16.7% related to the closed-eye group while 6.7% of the diseases being observed in the ointment group. The results of the analyses showed that there was a statistically significant different between the two treatment groups at p=0007. results: The findings of the present study suggested that using vitamin A eye ointment was more effective than using anti-allergic tapes in preventing eye conditions for patients at ICU. Thus, it is advisable to use vitamin A ointment as a technique to provide eye care for patients.
