Abstract

The comparison of sucking ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing of mint extract on xerostomia, nausea, and vomiting in chemotherapy patients of Mashhad Omid Hospital Abstract..................................................................................................... ……. Background and purpose: Nowadays, cancer is considered as a most important health problems, and breast cancer is a basic health problem among women in all around the world. Numerous methods are applied to cure cancer included surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is known as the most original, common, and oldest therapy method. Nausea and vomiting are considered as the most obvious side effects of chemotherapy. Xerostomia is of another side effect of this therapy method. It is a clinical problem created as a result of decreased production of saliva. This study makes try to compare the effect of sucking ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing mint extract on xerostomia, vomiting, and nausea in patients during chemotherapy. Materials and methods: This is a clinical study in which 90 patients were put into three groups of 30 members as control, intervention (ice containing mint extract) and intervention group (sucking ice bits with plain water) in a random way. 30cc water in control group, 30 cc ice containing 30 mint drops in intervention group, and 30 cc ice with plain water in intervention group were applied during chemotherapy. Xerostomia and nausea were estimated by VAS, while vomiting was studied through repetition numbers. When chemotherapy was finished, all of these side effects were recorded. Finally, xersotomia, vomiting, and nausea data in all three groups were compared with each other. Findings: The study results showed that there is a significant difference on xerostomia average during chemotherapy in two groups of sucking ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing mint extract to control one signifying their effects on xerostomia (ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing mint extract). Statistically, there was no significant difference on averages in groups. Also, there was a significant difference on nausea average of chemotherapy in two groups of sucking ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing mint extract to control one signifying their affects (ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing mint extract). Statistically, there was no significant difference on nausea averages between groups sucking ice bits and ice bits containing mint extract, also there was no significant difference on vomiting average during chemotherapy in two groups of sucking ice bits and ice bits containing mint extract in comparison to control one. Conclusion: The results signified that both sucking ice bits with plain water and ice bits with mint extract are effective on xerostomia, and they are able to decrease this condition in a large extent in comparison to control group. On the other hand, they showed not so much affect on vomiting, and there was no significant difference between sucking ice bits with plain water and ice bits containing mint extract to control group.
