Abstract

Background: Stroke is the world's first cardiovascular disorders.The patients at risk of gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, bloating and with consequences such as increased intracranial pressure and respiratory capacity is reduced. Given the high rate of such digestive problems among stroke patients and the limitations and complications of treatments available, The other way and treatment with fewer side effects, less expensive and can be implemented, such as the use of probiotics, to be considered.This study aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotic supplementation on stroke patients admitted to ICU were constipation and bloating. Materials and methods: The study, based on 65 stroke patients admitted to ICU Taleghani Hospital Mashhad, was conducted in 1393. Patients with a nasogastric tube, a lack of disposal in three days, were studied. Patients who did not tolerate the regime gavage, were excluded from the study. They were randomly divided into two groups (n = 33) and control (n =32) split and defecation and size of their waist circumference were measured before the study. Intervention group patients, in addition to routine treatment for a week, every 12 hours, probiotic supplements Zhry lactate 500 mg control group received only conventional treatment. At the end of defecation every day and all the patients were measured waist size. Using Poisson regression model data together, using SAS software version 1/9 and SPSS software version 11.5; 95% confidence level was analyzed. Results: In the experimental group the average number of bowel movements, more than once a day, 22/1, 62/0 and control group, respectively (p <0.0001). The measurement of waist circumference, abdominal circumference measurements showed that the intervention group, compared with the control group declined by an average of 1.6 centimeters and significant changes 0.028. Conclusions: Given the positive results of probiotics in the treatment of constipation and bloating, probiotics can be used as a non-drug therapy in the treatment of constipation and bloating used in these patients.
