Abstract

Background and objectives: Pruritus during dialysis is the most common complaint among the patients that are treated with hemodialysis. So that, despite of the progress of medical sciences and technology in the field of hemodialysis, there is still no absolute cure for this problem so, the aim of this study is determination the effect of cool dialysate on pruritus during hemodialysis. Materials and methods: This study is a two-group, triple-blind randomized clinical trial and parallel design before and after that is done in hemodialysis centers of Mashhad on sixty patients with chronic renal failure that are treating with hemodialysis. Patients were divided in two equal groups, thirty patients in the intervention and thirty patients in the control group. At first, patients in both groups were treated with dialysis for one week (3 sessions) and used standard solution at 37 ℃. In the next phase, for the control group was used solution at 37℃ while for the intervention group was used solution at 35.5℃ for a week (3 sessions). The pruritus status was recorded by a researcher-made questionnaire during dialysis sessions every hour . Then data were analyzed with using of the Mann–Whitney U test, chi-square, Fisher's exact test and generalized estimating equations by using statistical software R (version 3.2.0) at confidence level 95% and at the final, the results of the two groups were compared. Results: Before the intervention there is not any significant difference in the severity, extent and duration of pruritus between the two groups, after the intervention was observed that there is significant difference in the severity and duration of pruritus between them (p < 0/0001), while there is not significant difference in the extent of pruritus between both of them (p < 0/37). Conclusions: Dialysis with cool dialysate is a non-drug, simple and cheap method. The patients simply accepted this method. This method could reduce the severity and duration of pruritus in patients during dialysis significantly. Keywords: Pruritus, Dialysis Solutions, Renal Dialysis, Kidney Failure, Chronic.
