Abstract

Introduction: Treatment adherence in hemodialysis patients effect on quality of life and survival in this patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of family-centered empowerment model on the treatment adherence in hemodialysis patients. Materials & methods: This study was clinical trial that conducted at 78 hemodialysis patients and family active member in vasei hospital, sabsevar. after available sampling, with simple random allocation, patients divided in to intervention and control group. The family active member of the Intervention group received family centered empowerment model in four step (perceived threat, self-efficacy, self-esteem and evaluation) in six empowerment sessions. The demographic information (patients & family active members), information about the disease, family active member empowering Quesionnaire and hemodialysis patients treatment adherence Quesionnaire were instrument that conducted before and one month after intervention. the data were analyzed by 22 version SPSS software. Results: Demographic data (patients and family members) and information about the disease in both groups were homogeneous. Before the intervention, the both groups had no significant difference in perceived threat, self-efficacy and self-esteem, family members and adherence to the hemodialysis program, drug regimen, diet and fluid restriction (P>0.05). But after the intervention in both groups were statistically significant difference in all these dimensions, except self-esteem (P<0.001). Conclusion:Family centered empowerment model is effective for hemodialysis patients and is associated with increase in treatment adherence and family members empowering.
