Abstract
Title: Study the effect of co-administration of Orange juice with oral phenobarbital on its serum level in pediatric with seizure Introduction: Seizure is one of the most common diseases in childhood, so it is estimated that 10-4% of children experience at least one seizure during the first 16 years of life. One of the phenobarbital drug seizure therapies that controls seizures and prevention of recurrence. This study aimed to investigate the effect of orange juice on serum phenobarbital levels in children with seizure. Methods and Materials: This clinical trial was performed on 40 patients with seizure referred to Hamshmatiyeh Sabzevar Educational Research Center in 1396. Patients were randomly divided into two groups, which were given to a group of phenobarbital with a given dose of ordinary water and another the drug with an orange juice. Two specimens blood were taken before taking the drug and then two hours after the oral dose of the drug was taken and subjected to centrifugation and then freeze. After completing the samples, was sent to the laboratory to determine the serum level of the drug by HPLC. Data analysis was performed using spss version 22 software. Results: The mean increase in Phenobarbital serum level measured by HPLC in seizure patients in the group taking the drug with water was 6.18 mg/ml and in the group taking the drug with orange juice was 19.64 mg/ml. In two the group has a significant difference (P = 0.000). Conclusion: According to the results of the analysis of the serum level of the drug, it was found that patients who took their medication with orange juice showed a significant increase in the serum level of the drug compared to the patient taking the medication with regular water, which indicates an improvement in drug absorption when coated with orange juice.
