Abstract

Title: Study of the Relation between the Umbilical Cord Length and Perinatal Outcomes in Shahidan Mobini Hospital of Sabzevar during years 2013-2014 Basis & Aim: Umbilical Cord plays an important role in fetus wellbeing & any changes in Umbilical Cord morphology may causes serious side effects on it. The aim of this study was to assess the relation between umbilical cord length and perinatal outcomes such as first, fifth & fifteenth minutes APGAR, meconium staining, neonatal weight, height, gender & etc. Study method: This study was done during years 2013-2014 on 170 pregnant women, having inclusion criteria; with 36-42 weeks of gestational age. Demographic data and those about labor phases were obtained from mother’s files and recorded on checklists. Umbilical Cord length was estimated by meter. After clamping of the Umbilical Cord in tow sites, three parts were metered separately; the interval between these tow clamps; the part between the clamp and bellybutton and that between the clamp and placental junction. Then these parts were added together and that was the exact length of the Umbilical Cord. Data & Analysis: The average length of Umbilical Cord was about 56/47 ± 11/20 cm. There was no relation between Umbilical Cord length and first, fifth, fifteenth minutes APGAR, meconium staining, neonatal weight and height, Umbilical Coiling Index, Gravidity, Parity, Gestational Age, mother age and weight. But there was a relation between Umbilical Cord length with neonate gender, Umbilical Cord knot and circularity. Conclusion: There is a relation between Umbilical Cord length with neonate gender, Umbilical Cord knot and circularity, and in the other hand these tow former parameters have serious effects on perinatal outcomes, so it is beneficial to use antenatal ultrasonographic methods for stimating the Umbilical Cord length. Key words: Umbilical Cord, Meconium staining, APGAR.
