Abstract
The effect of peppermint tablet on prevention of postoperation nausea and vomiting after inguinal hernia in patiants admitted to the Emdad Hospital years 1395. Abstract Background and Aim: Postoperative nausea and vomiting are a common and undesirable postoperative complication. Recent therapies have not been effective in all patients. This study was performed to prevent nausea and vomiting after inguinal hernia. Materials and Methods: This triple blind clinical trial study was performed. The study population consisted of 90 patients with inguinal hernia admitted in Sabzevar Hospital. They were randomly divided into two equal groups. The mint tablet was given to the intervention group and to the placebo control group. The data collection tool was a demographic questionnaire and numerical scale nausea and vomiting instrument that was completed after the operation. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 20 using Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistical tests, paired and independent tests. Results: Of 90 subjects who underwent inguinal hernia surgery, 82 (91.1%) were male and 8 (8.9%) female. The mean age of the subjects in the intervention group was 40.66 ± 13.57 and 38.66 ± 11.88 in the control group. In the comparison of the two groups at six-hour intervals, the number of nausea severity was not significant (P = 0.3), but the number of nausea was significantly higher in the intervention 11 and the control group 39, which was significant (P = 0.0001). There was no significant difference in the number of vomiting at six-hour intervals between the two groups, but a total of six hours of vomiting was observed in the intervention group 2 and in the control group 22 (P = 0.0001). Conclusion: Peppermint tablets can reduce the number of nausea and vomiting after inguinal hernia surgery. Key words: postoperative nausea and vomiting, inguinal hernia, peppermint, menthol
