Abstract

Background and Aim: Early childhood caries as a dental problem has a high prevalence. The role of asthma disease has been raised as a risk factor for increasing dental caries tendency. The prevalence of asthma has increased over the past, which can mean that the number of children at risk for dental caries will increase. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of dental caries in asthmatic children treated with inhaled corticosteroids and healthy children. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 140 children with asthma and healthy children aged 3-12 years old (70 children with asthma, 70 healthy children) referred to clinics and pediatric clinics using the available method in 1396 Participated with easy sampling. Clinical examination for dental caries was performed based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) Oral Health Standard (DMFT). The examination of the teeth was done by the catheter, the dental mirror and the flashlight. All information was analyzed by SPSS 18 software. Results: The mean DMFT / dmft index score in each index of decay (D / d), missing (M / m), filling (F / f), in children with asthma was more in comparison with healthy children. The mean scores of D, M, F, and d, m, f indices in the asthmatic group, which used an average of about 2 years of corticosteroid sprays, were significantly higher than that of healthy children. (p<0.05) Conclusion: To promote dental health, prevention programs, services and organized dental care in children with asthma is necessary. Also, by providing appropriate strategies for preventing or reducing the prevalence of dental caries, steps should be taken to educate parents and reduce harm reduction strategies in relation to drug use methods.
