Abstract
Background and objective: Health literacy represents the cognitive and social skills that determine the motivation and ability of individuals to acquire access and understand the information to maintain and promote health. This study aimed to assess the health literacy of adults in Bardaskan City. Methods: In this cross-sectional and descriptive study, 700 subjects aged 18-65 years old were selected using multistage sampling in Bardaskan. Relevant information was obtained using demographic questionnaire and HELIA questionnaire (18-65 years-old), respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS and appropriate tests. Results: The mean age of participants was 31/25 ± 9/32 years old. 61/6% (n=431) of the participants were male and 38/4% (n=269) were female. 18/3% (n=128) of the participants had inadequate health literacy, 27/7 % (n=194) inadequate health literacy, 39/7 % (n=278) adequate health literacy and 14/3 (n = 100) had higher health literacy. Health literacy was significantly associated with age, marital status, education, occupation and history of illness (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that in general, health literacy in Bardaskan city is optimal. The level of education had the strongest relation with health literacy and the highest jump observed in the level of health literacy was in the case of those having higher education.
