Abstract

Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) is a toxic and volatile organic oxygenate compound, which is used as a fuel additive. This compound is not a human carcinogen; however, it is considered as a potential human carcinogen in high concentration. MTBE is one of the concerns about soil and groundwater because it dissolves readily in water. Soil and water contamination by MTBE is not common in most of the world. In this study, MTBE removal from synthetic contaminated soil has been conducted by using (EDTA)Na2.2H2O as electrolyte in electro-kinetic process, which has been never used before in previous studies. The study results showed that, maximum reduction in electric current in time of tests is dependent to the distilled water, as electrolyte, against the (EDTA)Na2.2H2O. Therefore, we quite logically observed an increase in output volume of electro-osmosis caused by using (EDTA)Na2.2H2O instead of distilled water. The values of electro-osmotic permeability (Ke) for distilled water and (EDTA)Na2.2H2O as electrolyte were 0.118 and 0.164 (10-5 cm2/v.sec), respectively. It means that the value of (Ke) is dependent on the type of electrolyte and the value of applied voltage (v). It has been discovered that the use of (EDTA)Na2·2H2O in order to clean up the MTBE from clay is not the best alternative and more research is required.
