Abstract

Background and Aims: Pesticides is one of the most common causes of death due to poisoning. This study was an epidemiological survey on death due to pesticide poisoning in Golestan province. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive analytical study was carried out with census on all profiles of referential bodies to Golestan department of forensic medicine who were died due to pesticide poisoning from March 2010 to March 2016. The extracted data, including information on demography, poisoning and death condition, were analyzed using SPSS 16 software and p-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 420 deaths due to poisoning cases, 135 cases (32.1)died from pesticide poisoning which is the second cause of death after opium. Of 135 cases, 60.7 (n=82) were men and 37.8 (n=51) of cases were aged 20�39 years. Aluminum phosphide was the main reason of poisoning related death (77.8, n=105) and most of poisoning cases occurred following suicidal attempts (97, n=131). There were significant differences between death of poisoning with agent and kind of poisoning in this study (P<0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated that pesticides, especially aluminum phosphide, were the second cause of death due to poisoning in Golestan province
